netflix announces its first original anime series, 'perfect bones'
They've already recruited one of Quentin Tarantino's favorite animators.
Last year, Netflix CEO and co-founder Reed Hastings vocalized his desire to make Netflix a wider and more globalized platform by creating original series in both the Anime and Bollywood genres. It's a smart move, considering the gigantic new fan bases that the streaming service could potentially reach, but it's also completely new territory for the American company. Recently, Netflix has broadened its Anime selection, but on Wednesday, the streaming company announced that its next original show will be a 12-episode Anime series titled Perfect Bones.
In collaboration with the Japanese animation studio Production I.G (which has previously brought us masterpieces like Attack on Titan, Ghost in the Shell, and Psycho-Pass), the new series premiere is planned to reach fans farther and faster than previous Anime debuts. While the Japanese animated series Knights of Sidonia and The Seven Deadly Sins bear the branding of Netflix originals, they were released via the streaming site after they had already aired on Japanese broadcasts. Perfect Bones will be first of its kind to hit all of Netflix's 190 serviced countries at the same time, and with all 12 episodes of the first season available for immediate streaming, in congruence with true Netflix original style.
The series will be directed by the esteemed animator Kazuto Nakazawa, best known for Parasite Dolls, Steamboy, and the animated sequence of Kill Bill Vol. 1. It follows a group of children who have been experimented on by scientists in an effort to create the perfect human, and thus, peace in the world. The nearly-perfected children are sent out into the world for training, but end up getting kidnapped by "an evil organization."
Equipped with such a large, international platform, and with one of the most prolific Anime studios on its side, Perfect Bones is expected to be groundbreaking and to reach an entire world of non-Anime fans. Hopefully, the choices made surrounding the hinted-at Bollywood series will be just as exciting.
