Dedicated to celebrating creative women — from makers and writers to directors, musicians, and artists — The Fifth Sense is an exciting online platform that will offer personal insights into their work and visions. Launching this week online, the platform has also commissioned six multi-disciplinary art works. The Mirror Maze is the first of these and opens in Peckham on September 21 for five days.
Created in response to CHANEL Fragrance by set designer Es Devlin, Mirror Maze is a multi-roomed space that explores scent as a journey through memory and identity. A complex installation of mirrors and projections, the audience will walk through a film, loose their thoughts in a mirror maze, feel the sensation of falling with video, and a smell a once-in-a-lifetime CHANEL scent created by the brand's in-house perfumer Oliver Polge that will only exist in the space.
Devlin is an acclaimed stage designer whose work spans music, fashion, theatre, opera, dance, and film. She has created sets in collaboration with Beyoncé, Kanye West, Jay Z, Adele, and The Weeknd, and stage designs for major arts institutions including National Theatre, Barbican, Royal Opera House, the Metropolitan Opera New York, and the Donmar Warehouse. Devlin also designed the London 2012 Olympic Games Closing Ceremony and the Rio 2016 Opening Ceremony, and has been awarded an OBE in recognition of her work.
i-D x Chanel: The Fifth Sense presents Mirror Maze by Es Devlin is free and open to the public from Wednesday, September 21 through Sunday, September 25, 2016 from 12pm - 8pm (10pm Fri and Sat), at Copeland Park, Peckham, SE15 3SN.
