musical duo yacht’s sex tape has been leaked so they’re inviting you to buy it
Pricing the tape at just $5, eager buyers crashed their website almost immediately. But is it all a hoax?
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. And if somebody steals your sex-tape, make some cash. That was the thinking of Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans of California based synth-pop duo YACHT when someone leaked their personal sex tape online.
In a public statement on Facebook last night, the duo behind Electro-pop banger Psychic City (Voodoo City) detailed that through a series of "technological missteps" somebody had accessed their private display of affection and posted it online. YACHT have been together both professionally and romantically for almost 10 years and according to Jona, "the financial pressures that we've been under, which de facto extend into our extracurricular lives, created a circumstance in which we felt like we needed a bit of an escape from the day-to-day. So we turned on a camera, became naked, and had sex."
Legal proceedings have commenced against the "morally abject" person, but this doesn't mean that the video will be taken down anytime soon. So in response, they've uploaded the tape, viewable for just $5, to their very own website (aptly named fuck.teamyacht.com) because according to Jona, "Controlling how this video is seen, and who profits from it, is the only form of agency we have left over this exploitative situation."
The website reportedly crashed when their decision was announced, apparently a lot of fans think $5 is a pretty decent bargain. Feminist writer and creative Miranda July was one of their customers, she jumped on Twitter to declare her admiration for the obvious display of true love between the dynamic duo. Of course, no scandal like this goes without scepticism: some believe it might all be a hoax. "So this is fake right? the only people posting screen shots are their celebrity mates," wrote one 4CHAN user.
