princess nokia's huge club tune 'brujas' gets a music video
The artist co-directed the clip for her deeply innovative banger.
Princess Nokia has shared the video for her track "Brujas," a tearaway club hit from her September mixtape 1992. The rapper, born Destiny Frasqueri, co-directed the clip with frequent collaborator Asli Baykal — the pair also created the sun-drenched video for her song "Soul Train."
The film sees Destiny rolling with a crew of powerful women of color, paying tribute to her roots within the Caribbean Santería religion and her ancestors from the Yoruba people of Africa. "I'm that Blackorican bruja straight out from the Yoruba, and my people come from Africa-diaspora Cuba," Destiny raps. "Bruja", Spanish for "witch", is becoming a popular identification for young men and women with Spanish-speaking roots.
Last year, to celebrate our 35th anniversary, we named Princess Nokia one of the world's most important young musicians. When we asked her what she did, she replied "I'm an artist. I am naturally compelled to narrate stories and vision the work that I make." Watch Destiny's "Brujas" vision come to life above.
