comme-heads go wild at the brand's epic sample sale
Discover the lengths that hypebeasts will go to for $50 Comme des Garçons wallets.
Comme des Garçons fans are a notoriously rabid bunch. Think John Waters in his signature CDG jackets, Pharrell in an endless stream of Play, and the eccentrically dressed white-haired women who haunt the Dover Street Markets of London, New York, and Tokyo. So when the ultimate Japanese insider label puts on its first sample sale since 2013, its devotees have no problem lining up around the block for 70% off Comme brands and 80% off the other avant-garde labels sold at Dover Street. Our woman on the inside at the Super-Market-Market spotted Craig Green paint collection gear, Raf Simons tee-shirts and sneakers, J.W. Anderson coats, and lots and lots of Junya Watanabe. New Yorkers have been lining up around the block outside the Skylight Clarkson space since early this morning, and no doubt will until the sale ends on Monday.
As befits a brand that regularly collaborates with artists, the market is part sale, part cultural happening. Text artist Baron Von Fancy designed the signs ("Shop Til You Drop", "Everything Must Go"), DJs including Mike Q will be spinning, and Know Wave Radio is broadcasting live from Skylight on Saturday. Everyone's favorite fashion snackerie Rose Bakery will be on-site with coffee and pastries. Even the bare-bones merchandising - colorful crates and Chinatown madras shopping bags - look like art installations.
Disciples outside New York are definitely feeling the FOMO. Poor @HARRYT666 on Twitter requests: "IS ANYONE IN NEW YORK GOING 2 THE COMME DES GARCONS SAMPLE SALE ON WASHINGTON STREET??? I NEED 2 GET SOME STUFF, LET ME PAYPAL U". Any takers?
