Three months ago, beauty blogger Em Ford -- who writes under the name My Pale Skin and who has suffered from acne all her life -- started posting pictures of herself without any makeup on. Since then she's received over 100,000 comments criticizing the way she looks. From "WTF is wrong with her face?" to "Ew," "Gross," "Horrible," and even "Ugly as fuck," each comment was more vitriolic than the next. In contrast, the comments she received when fully made up weren't anything other than high praise ("you're so pretty," and "you look amazing."). Determined to expose the psychological effects of cyber bullying and reveal the unrealistic ideals of beauty to which the whole world rigorously compares us to, Em made a video of herself, un made up and standing alone, as all of the horrific comments she received appear one by one next to her. At the end, Em makes a passionate plea to women worldwide to unite in their suffering and join in the conversation by using the hashtag #YouLookDisgusting. Fast-forward to today, and the video has over 8 million (yes, million) views while the hashtag remains trending. "One challenge many face today," Em explained to People, "is that as a society, we're so used to seeing false images of perfection, and comparing ourselves to unrealistic beauty standards that it can be hard to remember the most important thing - you are beautiful." We couldn't agree more.
