10 things you need to know about poppy okotcha, presented by g-star raw
Get to know the model with her star in the ascent.
Model Poppy Okotcha has done her fair share of traveling: she was born in London, moved to Johannesburg at six years old, and then back to the UK at 12. Of course, now that she's fast becoming fashion's one to watch, the 20-year-old beauty has found herself back on the road again, hitting up the fashion capitals of the world while walking for the likes of Vivienne Westwood, Alberta Ferretti, Marques'Almeida, and more. When she's not staring down the lens at some of fashion's finest photographers or fronting campaigns for Uniqlo x Lemaire, Poppy spends her free time talking to animals and pondering the lives of inanimate objects. Currently the face of G-Star's Pouch collection (a range of jeans that can easily be recognized by its clutch-like pouch), here are ten things you need to know about her.
1. When she was a kid she dreamt of being…
"The Prime Minister."
2. Failing that, she settled on being a model.
"I took a gap year and thought I'd model for a few months to make some money to travel. So I walked into Select and got sucked in! At first it was just a way to make money, but I've realized that it's also gives a platform to reach a lot of people and do some good with that. I'm organizing an event in October to raise money for refugees. Keep your eyes peeled!"
3. So far, her favorite modeling moment has been:
"Climbing rock cliffs in Joshua Tree Park."
4. But she was also pretty excited about fronting the campaign for the G-Star RAW Pouch collection.
"It was thrilling. G-Star cares for the environment, which is important to me and should be important to everyone, really, since we depend on it for everything."
5. Like all savvy young women, in her pouch she'd keep…
"The pouch is perfect for carrying sunglasses, lipstick, purse and anything special you need to keep safe at festivals and still leaves your hands free to dance!"
6. Aside from being a model, she's also very creative.
"I paint and make clothes, I'm actually really into gardening it's calming, I just started writing too... I like making things basically."
7. Her friends would describe her as:
"Thoughtful but bad ass <3."
8. The worst piece of advice she's ever been given:
"You should smile with you mouth closed cos you have quite a gummy smile." Someone told me that when I was like 13. Not cool. Luckily, I didn't listen and stayed true to my gums.
9. If she could have one superpower it would be:
"To be able to talk to anything like animals or even stuff like salt that doesn't talk, see what it feels like to be salt."
10. She has some very wise words on being a girl in 2016:
"Being a girl in the UK in 2016 is special, we have almost everything we need to be free and independent. But because of this I think we also have the responsibility to make sure that that freedom extends through the whole world."
