There are few curveballs in the nominations, which include Boyhood, Foxcatcher, The Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game.

In a rapid-fire, no-nonsense ceremony in Hollywood, directors JJ Abrams, Alfonso Cuarón, Star Trek actor Chris Pine and Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs announced this year's nominees for the 87th Academy Awards. There were no major deviations from predictions, with Birdman, Boyhood, Whiplash, Foxcatcher, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game being the main contenders across the board.

Brits Benedict Cumberbatch and Eddie Redmayne will battle it out with Bradley Cooper, Steve Carrell and Michael Keaton for Best Actor, and Rosamund Pike gets her first nomination, facing Marion Cotillard, Felicity Jones, Julianne Moore and Reese Witherspoon.
