Photography Hanna Moon [The Global Youth Issue, No. 343, Summer 2016]

Having worked with the likes of Yohji Yamamoto and Marques'Almeida, bright young photographer Hanna Moon is taking the fashion world by storm. For The Female Gaze Issue, she channeled her inner Ariel by transforming actress Hari Nef into a mermaid. What advice would she give any female photographers looking to follow in her footsteps? "Figure out what you want to say and don't let anyone tell you that you can't say it your way." As we spotlight the industry's freshest, most exciting female talent, here are 10 things you need to know about Hanna.

1. She never considered becoming a photographer before moving to London...
"I studied Fashion Communication at Central Saint Martins and started taking pictures then. I made A Nice Magazine as my final year project at school and I did a few personal photo projects for it. Then I naturally carried on taking pictures for different projects and publications."

2. Nor was she always creative, or well behaved!
"I studied biology and was really good at it. I wasn't always a good child though, I was pretty naughty for my parent's standards."

3. She has a certain Frank Ocean collaborator to thank for her success…
"I worked for Tyrone Lebon for two years. I learned a lot from him about being a professional photographer."

4. When it comes to fashion, it's all about the Japanese labels...
"I love going to second-hand clothing shops in Japan and buying brands like Comme des Garçons and Yohji Yamamoto."

5. Her interests extend far beyond fashion though...
"I am very interested in the Korean feminism scene at the moment, particularly this website called Megalian that launched last year. It started 'mirroring' traditional misogyny in Korea in a pretty radical way, by making fun of Korean men in general."

6. She has some slightly unusual web browsing habits...
"I read Korean news a lot, particularly the comments left by people. I find it interesting to see how people react to important matters. It's pretty voyeuristic, but I get a relief when the majority of people have the same opinion as me."

7. Getting into photography wasn't easy, but it's worth it...
"Funding for the personal projects and being able to afford editorials to show your vision isn't easy, especially for the photographers just starting out. But being a photographer gives you an excuse to do anything. It makes you meet people, go places, and do things."

8. Her advice for aspiring photographers is simple...
"Keep taking a lot of pictures of what you are truly interested in. You don't need a glamorous idea to start your own project. I think the most personal pictures are the most interesting. Make something of your own. "

9. The best shoot experience she's ever had all started in a bar in Tokyo...
"I shot a transgender woman, Yoshino, in Tokyo in 2015. I found her in a gay bar in Shinjuku and asked her to model for us the next day. We all met in Shinjuku street at midnight following day. We were all so drunk when we met up and the only thing I remember is laughing so much whilst taking the pictures. My friend Joyce who was styling was so drunk that she couldn't even lift her head up. I couldn't clearly remember what I shot over the night but I loved all the pictures after they have been developed."

10. Her next project is a very personal one...
"Finding true love."
