38 new emoji including avocado, bacon and pregnant woman are on the way

Emoji (apparently the UK's fastest growing language) is adding 38 new characters including food, animals and gender counterparts to existing ones, to our ever-expanding library.

While our demand for racially diverse emoji was met with five shades of skin tone and a Simpsons-yellow default face, our cries for bacon, avocado and "nauseated face" (because how many times have you looked for that little green vom face and been shocked to find there isn't one?) emoji have evaded us. Until now.

The tech geniuses over at Unicode in California (the guys who develop emoji) have submitted 38 new little pictures for approval and plan to add them to our existing library in June of next year. The new list was decided based on public requests, the amount of Google searches and the cultural significance of each object/person - so you've got the gender counterparts for the Princess in the form of a Prince; Father Christmas in the form of Mother Christmas; and the Bride in the form of Man in Tuxedo, among others. Check out the initial proposed graphics for the Unicode 9.0 update here, or scroll down for a full list of what's to come…
