k stewart is our generation's very own mariah carey

She's lent her voice to Oliver Helden's 'Last All Night' and TCTS's 'Games,' but it's 19 year-old West Londoner Kate Stewart's own music that really makes us swoon. Working with Bondax, Karma Kid and MNEK, the Maida Vale singer is channeling some...

A brief history of me would include…
Graduating from college and performing at the Shepherd's Bush Empire, where everyone came to see what we were doing. That's where I met my manager. Through that, I met Bondax, who I've done two tours with, then I met Karma Kid, who is producing a lot of my music now. I met him through Bondax, because they're best friends.

The record that made me want to do music was…
Christina Aguilera's Stripped. I know every single word of that album. It was just her voice, it's one of my most favourite voices ever.

As well as Bondax and Karma Kid, I've also been working with…
TCP and Oliver Heldens. TCP I met via Bondax. And then with Oliver, Becky Hill and MNEK were working on Last All Night (Koala). They played it to me when we were at mine once and asked if I wanted to sing it.

My own music is different to what I'm guesting on because…
My own sound is a lot more chilled and a lot less "hands in the air." But it's still in the same vein, top-line wise, because I always stick to a 90s vibe. I'm bringing it back to the 90s. None of the music that I've written is what's going on at the moment. I'm trying to do Mariah Carey/Whitney Houston vibes. I'm not trying to do the whole Jessie J pop thing; I'm trying to make it a bit more old school.

The first song I put out on SoundCloud was tweeted by…
Diplo. That was pretty cool.

Recently I met…
Skrillex, when we were in France, because he's friends with Bondax. We chilled with him for ages, and spoke about doing a session when I was in LA, and we tried to set it up, but he's obviously so busy that we couldn't fit one in.

The first record I bought was...
Probably S Club Seven. Actually no, it was Hearsay [laughs].

The last gig I went to was…
Justin Timberlake in Australia. I love him. And I went to watch Sinead Harnett at Birthdays a couple of weeks ago. I was just in awe of her voice. I go to as many gigs as I can.

If I were stranded on the moon for eternity, I would want the entire catalogue of...
Beyonce. No one will ever top her. Her work ethic is just crazy, and the way she performs. I don't think she's a real person — she's like a robot, she's too good. Everything is spot on.

My karaoke song of choice is…
"I Want to Dance with Somebody" by Whitney and "Always Be My Baby" by Mariah Carey.

The song I'd like played at my funeral is…
Kwabs, "Perfect Ruin."

The song I wish I'd written is…
"If I Were A Boy" by Beyoncé. There are so many songs, melodically, that I would have loved to have written, but the concept of that is so cool.

The three biggest influences on me are…
1) My mom, because I take a lot of my work ethic from her — she's so organized and motivated. 2) Emotions, just doing what I love. 3) Life. I try to enjoy every day.

I'm currently working with…
MNEK, who is a genius. He's so talented. I've never worked with someone who's as quick as he is. Usually I think of melodies and then set it up, and then write, but he'll think of a melody and then write to it at the same time. I'm also working with Shift-K3y and with these two guys called Movement, out in LA.

My celebrity crush is…
Justin Timberlake. I'm obsessed with him.

A track of my own which sums me up best is…
"Tell Me About That," because that's the one that set it up; it's old school, a bit of 90s vibes. It's about taking control.

The worst job I've ever had is…
Greeting people at Abercrombie and Fitch. I hated it. I literally stood at the front and said "Hi" to people when they walked in. It was so boring and I hated everyone who worked there. It was so not me, but I was 16 and trying to make some cash, and it was the easiest job ever but it was so boring.

The best thing to happen to me recently was…
Getting a Top Five with Last All Night (Koala).

And the worst thing was…
Having tonsillitis.

As an artist, I stand for…
Something new. I listen to a lot of radio and I try to suss out what's happening at the moment, music wise. And although I want people to like my music, I'm trying to bring something a bit different to what's already on the radio. I don't want to do the obvious thing.

One thing that freaks me out is…
Sick. I have an outrageous phobia of vomit — if someone in this room were to vomit I would be gone. You would not see me.

My party-trick is…
Impressions. I do a good Cheryl Cole.

For 2015, I'm tipping…
Sinead Harnett. Honestly her voice, I could listen to it all day.
