video premiere: sinead harnett, she ain't me
Press play on this anthem for scorned lovers the world over...
She's written tracks with Wiley, Ryan Hemsworth and Snakehips, but it's Sinead Harnett's solo sounds that we're most interested in. The North Londoner dares to be a bit different with her 90s inflected R&B and the results are often wonderful. Today on i-D, Sinead premieres the video for her brand new single She Ain't Me, a tough-talking track that reminds an ex that while she may be gone, she'll never be forgotten.
How are you?
I'm great thank you, life is...hectic/amazing/a blessing! I'm looking at a half full glass and I find that extremely interesting (laughs).
You've cut your hair! Talk us through that please.
Yeah - I did. I just thought - WHY NOT? A bit of experimentation never hurt nobadddy.
How does it work with videos? Do you have an idea of what you want or do you leave it in the hands of a director?
I feel videos are an extension of my creative process. I like to envision how a song might look, based on how it makes me feel. I have my ideas, often directors do too; so I like to find a happy medium.
What was the visual concept for She Ain't Me; how does the video reflect what you're saying in the song?
To me the video is a simple introduction to my head. Rather than do an obvious narrative to the story of the song, I felt it would be more interesting to keep it minimal. I wanted to invite the listener/viewer into my own world, where I can be myself and tell my story in the comfort of my own surroundings. The animation mirrors the chaos the situation created in my head, and adds an energy to it I really love.
The video is set in your bedroom. Is it like your 'IRL' bedroom?
I'm sharing with two mates and ended up with the box room. It's small, but nicely formed. I have a clothes rail in there so there isn't much space. But the ceilings are high, everything is mostly white and it flits between tidy and organised chaos. I have a map of the world and Dalai Lama's 18 rules to life as my only 2 posters!
So, we sort of see your bum in the video...
Well it isn't as revealing as that sounds (laughs)! It's just me throwing my jeans on in the laid back way I would at home. Because of that I guess I feel relatively comfortable with people seeing me, a normal girl, doing something as part of my normal routine.
She Ain't Me is one of those anthems isn't it? Is this based on a real life situation? Love can be crap can't it.
Ahhh love that you've called it an anthem! It's based on true events yeah - a situation that has happened a few times, not just to me but to friends around me. Love can be crap, but it's all part of growing up and finding out what we do and DON'T want from a relationship! I definitely don't want to be with anyone who can't be loyal!
You've worked with lots of interestig people like Snakehips and Ryan Hemsworth etc. Who you working with now? Is there an album on the way? What will it sound like?
There is an album on the way, which I can't wait to share. I've worked with some incredible people on it - Two Inch Punch, James Fauntleroy and Mojam to name a few. It's a privilege to get to work with so many talented musicians/producers and writers.
If there's anything else we should know, about anything at all, now's the time to tell.
I love i-D! Your recent Rihanna shoot was KILLER! Thanks for the support and for premiering 'She Ain't Me' out June 7th x
