mø’s new club banger and the best of new music friday
Happy long weekend, UK.
Karen Marie Ørsted can do no wrong. Halfway through her biggest ever UK tour, the Danish singer better known as MØ released a bouncy club track along with a karaoke-style music video full of childhood photos. Turning 30 this year, Nostalgia sees her look back over the good times; baby Karen at the piano or with an armful of kittens or rocking crimped hair, teen karen with dark eyeliner and cans of beer in her emo and punk bands. “Shout out to my old friends and family who make an appearance in this little karaoke flashback video curated by my lovely parents!!” she shared on Twitter.
In other news, LA’s Hayley Kiyoko (dubbed “lesbian Jesus” by her fans) released her debut album, Expectations, today. It’s a poptastic record full of queer romance and, honestly, we can’t get enough. There’s a killer Kehlani feature in there somewhere, but we’re still obsessed with lead single Curious, which follows MØ in today’s playlist. You’re going to want to roll up your sleeves now, because next up we’ve got Dish Washing by 160 bpm grime producer/Radar Radio host Pro Fiskal from Edinburgh. It’s a super sweet melodic production taken from his forthcoming album, due later this spring on Hyperdub.
Then there’s a string-laden ballad called I Don’t Wanna Know from Sigrid’s mystery EP; young London-based jazz lord Kamaal Williams who makes things way mellow with Salaam; and Octavian continues to impress with Hands. Then there’s the Rich The Kid and Khalid collab from the former’s new album The World Is Yours; The Garden's new album Mirror Might Steal Your Charm; and Unknown Mortal Orchestra accurately decide that Everyone Acts Crazy These Days.
There’s loads more too, including new magic from CHVRCHES, Lion Babe, GKR, Billie Eilish and J’Danna. Oh and the whole thing ends on a high with a cover of Robyn’s Call Your Girlfriend by Vanessa “A Thousand Miles” Carlton. No, we’re not sure either.
