selena gomez' tour merch pays tribute to selena quintanilla
One icon toasts another as Gomez kicks off her 'Revival' tour.
Anyone shocked by how Selena Gomez became the most-followed person on Instagram is ignoring the artist's cultural savvy and keen eye for sick visuals. Gomez, who is currently embarking on a tour for her latest album Revival, just demonstrated she has both these things in bucketloads when she unleashed her tour merch earlier this week. Among the high-waisted jorts, cropped "GOMEZ" hoodie, and Dia de los Muertos satin bomber are a couple of T-shirts featuring a very familiar font. It's the one popularized by the trailblazing late Latina singer Selena Quintanilla, a Mexican-American singer often credited with sending Tejano music into the mainstream zeitgeist before her tragic death in 1995 at the age of just 23. The new shirts allow Selenators to pay tribute to two iconic Selenas with one easy payment of $35.
This hardly the first sign of Quintanilla's enduring relevance that we've seen in recent months. Last year MAC announced a posthumous collaboration with the late '90s legend following a long campaign from her legions of fans — amongst which we can count Big Sean, Kylie Jenner, and OVO king Drake, who Instagrammed himself in a Selena T-shirt (featuring the same font) last February.
