Former child star Elijah Wood has spoken out about child abuse in Hollywood, describing an environment where young actors are "preyed upon" by industry figures. Speaking to the Sunday Times the 35-year-old said that while he had been protected from any abuse, "There are a lot of vipers in this industry, people who only have their own interests in mind."

Describing an alleged culture of suppression and assault, he likened the situation to that of Jimmy Savile in the UK. When former television presenter Savile died in 2011 longstanding rumors of sexual misconduct were revealed to be true: he had been an active sexual predator for decades. Reflecting on the current situation in Hollywood, Elijah added: "There is a darkness in the underbelly. If you can imagine it, it's probably happened."

Continuing, he said abuse continues because predators are protected, while victims "can't speak as loudly as people in power." Elijah explained that he was personally sheltered from these experiences because his mother didn't let him attend industry parties, "She was far more concerned with raising me to be a good human than facilitating my career."

His claims come in the wake of accusations from Chloë Sevigny over the predatory culture around casting in Hollywood. Speaking at Cannes last week, the actress and director said young women were often taken advantage of when going after roles.
