Blade Runner 2049 is coming out next week (5 October) and it's going to be great, obviously – it stars Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford and Jared Leto! But, do you know what would have made it even better? David Bowie. Bowie makes everything better, and we miss him dearly.
So, it's with that morose, melancholic, 'what could have been' feeling we report that Bowie was meant to be the villain in the upcoming Blade Runner film. Talking to Metro, Director Denis Villeneuve revealed the casting process for the film's antagonist Neander Wallace: "Our first thought [for the character] had been David Bowie, who had influenced Blade Runner in many ways." Unfortunately, that wasn't to be, and the part ended up going to Jared Leto.
But we can't get too hung up on this particular issue. As Jared proved in this prequel to the new film, he's really nailed the terrifying creepy villain thing. And the casting of Ryan Gosling's character, Officer K? "The part was written for Ryan right from the start. He was perfect," Denis explains.
Addendum: he is perfect.
