is this goodbye from band of outsiders?
Scott Sternberg is apparently closing his Hollywood-beloved line after 11 years.
Kirsten Dunst for Band of Outsiders
True to its name, Band of Outsiders has always been a different kind of fashion brand. It's played by its own rules and attracted a following of fresh faces who are willing to do the same: Scott Sternberg's prairie-print dresses and off-kilter suiting have been worn by some of the funniest, most irreverent stars in Hollywood — Frank Ocean, Aziz Ansari, Kirsten Dunst. (See also: Ed Ruscha's spring/summer 12 campaign polaroids.)
So the news — though still unconfirmed — that the brand is shuttering is especially sad.
Fashionista broke the story this morning, reporting that the label has laid off the majority of its staff and canceled its fall orders. And while Sternberg told WWD that he is "advised not to comment at this time," the forecast doesn't look good.
But this hadn't been the case for long. In what was maybe the perfect expression of his brand's vibe, Sternberg took both the ever-quirky Hanne Gaby Odiele and the all-American Karlie Kloss to the CFDA awards last year. Two years before that he'd been named Menswear Designer of the Year at the same event. And just this past fall he opened the brand's first store in New York.
Meanwhile, California, home to the brand since its formation in 2004, is in the middle of a fashion renaissance. Thanks to the recent Louis Vuitton Palms Spring spectacular and Hedi Slimane's Cali-fication of Saint Laurent, Los Angeles is being heralded as the new New York — or at least a rising fashion capital. So while we wait for the official word from the BOO team, we hope that this is just another step in the brand's evolution, and not its final goodbye.
