wolfgang tillmans discusses working on frank ocean’s ‘endless’
Ocean debuted Tillmans’ unreleased track ‘Device Control’ in his new visual album ‘Endless.’ The photographer now shares more information about the collaboration and his forthcoming EP.
Last month, celebrated German photographer and beloved i-D contributor Wolfgang Tillmans surprise released a thumping techno EP 30 years in the making, and shared his plans for its follow-up. Titled Device Control, the new record generated massive excitement when Tillmans announced that it features a new remix from dark electronic trio Salem — the first music the band has made in the five years since releasing its outstanding LP King Night was in 2011. Last night, it was revealed that Tillmans' single "Device Control" is included in Frank Ocean's new visual album Endless. Earlier today, Tillmans shared more information about the collaboration on Instagram.
"Enormously proud and happy that Frank Ocean did include my (yet unreleased) track 'Device Control' as intro and as a full length ending of his 'Endless' album!" Tillmans' statement begins. "We were in touch about the intro, but I wouldn't believe it until it happened. Four weeks ago I showed him a few songs, which I had written and produced for myself earlier in the year, and he replied 'Device Control is brilliant. Love. Can I sample it for the intro of my album?' I agreed to it, and to my excited surprise this morning he didn't just sample it. He released my complete original track as the end of this amazing album. So now it's out — and in full length," Tillmans writes.
This is not the first time Tillmans and Ocean have worked together. Photographs of Ocean which Tillmans shot in Berlin appeared in his emotional and outstanding David Zwirner show PCR, which ran in New York between September and October 2015. In one of the images, Ocean is wearing a white hoodie with racing stripes which appears to match the sweatshirt The Fader found in his website's source code around that same time.
Tillmans also revealed that the Device Control EP will be released digitally tomorrow, with a vinyl release on September 16. It includes "two addictive remixes by Berlin's Daniel Wang & J.E.E.P. and one by US legends Salem, all of 'Make It Up As You Go Along' [Tillmans' fantastic lead single on his EP 1986/2016]," Tillmans writes.
