Euphoria is returning sooner than you think
Queen Zendaya and co. will bless us with bonus episodes before season two in 2021.
After celebrating her dual crowning as both the youngest ever and only the second Black Emmy winner for Outstanding Lead Actress for Euphoria (yes, our queen did THAT), Zendaya has revealed that everybody’s hedonistic youth culture obsession will be back sooner than anticipated.
“All I can really say is that season two won't happen for a while, but we do have a couple bridge episodes that we're shooting currently that aren't really part of season one or season two, but kind of give people a little something different with Euphoria to hold us over a little bit until we're able to [air the next season]”, she teased to ET Online.
Earlier this month, HBO president Casey Bloys confirmed that they’re working on a “special COVID episode” of the A24-produced show. Since it kicked off last summer, Euphoria has received acclaim for the way it portrays mental health, trauma, drugs and sex through a distinctly Gen Z lens, all while serving iconic -- and Emmy award-winning -- makeup looks. Not a lot is known about what these bonus ‘Covid’ episodes could revolve around, plot-wise, but according to Zendaya they will be filmed with ‘a limited amount of people in a safer environment’.
Production on the second season had already begun last March before it was halted due to the ongoing pandemic. “We had done table reads and wardrobe fittings and all kinds of things and then obviously everything happened and we got shut down, literally like two days before we were about to start the first day of shooting,” Zendaya explained to Ben Platt on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in August. “So that was a bummer, but we’re trying to figure out how to eventually create a season two that we’re all really proud of.”
A release date hasn’t yet been announced for the bonus episodes, so we’ll have to sit tight for that news. All we know is that they will air before season two kicks off, sometime around late next summer.
