"Behind the facade of an industrial estate in Leytonstone in East London is the headquarters of United Colours of Mas. I walked into a vast loading bay area where there were huge skeletal structures waiting to be worked on. I found room 46K where I met the founder, Trinidadian and very upbeat and excited Richard. As soon as you step in the door you are instantly hit by pure carnival love: feathers, colours and everything dazzling. This is definitely art and fashion. I was the fly on the wall while some of the carnival looks were handed out, which was evidently a definite emotional experience for everyone. The boxes came out and gleaming looks appeared, but it wasn't until the headdresses were given out that tears streamed. For many it was the moment of the year they had been waiting for. I overheard a particular couple who has a whole room specially dedicated to their carnival extravaganzas over the years. The team and the two young male designers were at work surrounded by other skilful volunteers. A sense of unity was evident. Carnival atmosphere begins here!" - Savannah Baker
