kanye west throws a wrench into nyfw schedule again
Yeezy 3 show coincides with other designers' time slots.
Though it may seem like a nonstop party to some, New York Fashion Week is deadly serious to designers. Nabbing a spot on the official calendar, organised by the Council of Fashion Designers of America, is a make-or-break reality for up-and-coming designers and well-established brands.
However, for Kayne West, the rules don't seem to apply. He announced his 2016 Yeezy Season 3 runway show a mere two weeks before Fashion Week begins, snagging a prime spot: 4 p.m. on February 11, the first official day of NYFW.
West's parade of designs will be but one part of a massive Kanye-a-thon at Madison Square Garden. The rapper/designer will release his new album, Waves (previously known as Swish, previously known as So Help Me God) simultaneously. Oh, and you can buy tickets to see the whole spectacle at a theatre near you — it'll be live-streamed to over 20 countries around the world.
It goes without saying that the designers whose shows had long been scheduled around the time West picked were not pleased. One of them, Marissa Webb, had a show scheduled for 5 p.m. on the 11th, and she rescheduled right away, getting a slight dig in via her press release on Friday that she had an "updated show time" of 3 p.m., saying: "Due to unforeseen circumstances, we are 'swishing' the time of the show to 3 p.m. on Thursday, February 11. Sorry for making 'waves.' "
It is worth noting that this is not Kanye's first time of usurping the Fashion Week spotlight. He did the same thing for his Yeezy Season 2 collection, only announcing the show date and time the day before his super-surprise show. He later apologised for it in this Vanity Fair interview, saying, "I totally apologise to any of those designers and anyone that wanted that slot. I would love to send them some flowers or maybe wear a sweatshirt if that could help to make up for it."
So maybe, giving the world two weeks' notice means that Kanye's learned a lesson after all.
