Fashion East, London’s crucial incubator for young design talent, has just announced the latest menswear recipient of its support for spring/summer 20: Saul Nash! As the latest on the initiative’s roster, he’ll now be showing at London Fashion Week: Men’s in June alongside Mowalola and Robyn Lynch, who first received support for autumn/winter 2019. He also joins an impressive register of alumni, including Kim Jones, Charles Jeffrey and Grace Wales Bonner.

With a BA in Performance Design from CSM and an MA in Menswear from the Royal College of Art under his belt, Saul has quickly made a name for a fashion practice that explores the moving body through garments that intelligently subvert expectations of sportswear.

“I’m so grateful to Fashion East,” Saul told i-D, “their support has come at a really crucial time in my career, and has given me the space to continue studying the boundaries between dance, performance and fashion.”

Saul’s explorations of these boundaries were most recently seen at his LFWM debut for autumn/winter 19. In the Old Truman Brewery’s DiscoveryLAB, dancers, styled by i-D Fashion Editor-at-Large Ib Kamara and choreographed by the designer himself, explored and demonstrated the kinetic potential of the garments over the course of a two-hour performance.

How does he plan to bring that same energy to the runway? “It’ll be a challenge, but I always enjoy one!” Saul tells us. “I see it as a push to be more articulate in terms of what the dancers’ intentions are from the beginning. But, after all, a runway is still a performance space. My first presentation might have been more experiential, but I look forward to translating that to a runway environment.”

And we look forward to seeing you pull it off, Saul! June can’t come sooner.
