Shot in Bourne Woods in Farnham, film freaks might recognise the location of Emprss's beautiful video for Blue as the same place where Ridley Scott filmed Gladiator and Robin Hood. Taking inspiration from the Alien auteur himself, Blue is a cerebral take on two alternate worlds - from the stark insular to the bleak wilderness. Emprss comprises of three men whose yearning sonics sound something like what might emerge if James Blake, Thom Yorke and Elliott Smith formed a band. The brilliant Blue is taken from Emprss's Blue EP which has just been released and is four tracks of simply sublime brilliantness.

Who is Emprss?

Emprss is Leo, Ralph and Johnny. We make music in a sleepy town in the south of England.

What is Emprss?

From the outset, what we set out to make and what we ended up with were often worlds apart. Gradually, we learned to go into the studio without preconceived notions of what the end result should be, and instead to let ideas develop organically. Drawing influence from artists like My Bloody Valentine, The Cure, Portishead, Massive Attack and Death Cab for Cutie, our sound is built upon layers of synthetic textures, traditional instrumentation and an unhealthy obsession with pop music. Emprss is: occasionally angular, sometimes cinematic, but always honest.

Why is Emprss?

There isn't much to do around here, unless you're into alpacas and pine forests. What started as a good reason to hang out quickly became hundreds of songs. We didn't know any better. Ralph and Leo have been writing together for a decade now, with Johnny dipping in and out for various projects along the way. This band was never meant to leave Leo's bedroom, but we're pretty glad it did.

When is Emprss?
We're heading out to Austin for SXSW this month, dropping an album later in the year, and playing live as much as humanly possible.
