The glossy futuristic video is a Sin City-style revenge thriller, featuring a couple in a bruised, doomed romance, wearing smeared tribal make-up. Opening with a silent phonecall, the film leads us through a chopped-and-screwed narrative, with part-Chinese subtitles shielding us from knowing the full story. Colours change from city blue to blood red as the scorned female exacts her revenge, along with weapon wielding gang of girls. We caught up with the director to discuss influences and inspirations.

The video has such strong visual references, what are the main influences for Very First Breath?
We initially planned to do like a contemporary neon-noir The Warriors meets Enter The Void gang video, focussing on the highs and lows of a relationship. We then stripped it down to what it is now.

You have just finished your first feature, what's the next step for you?
I'm working on a new script for an unconventional gangster film.

How would you describe your visual style?
I'm always looking for a poppy aesthetic.

What's your favourite music video?
Fatboy Slim's Praise You by Spike Jonze.

Where does your visual style come from?
Amsterdam.

What are you most proud of?
My first feature, which is soon to be released, called PRINS / PRINCE.

What inspires you?
Werner Herzog, Nicolas Cage, Harmony Korine, Monet, A$AP Rocky, and Savage Garden.

Hudson Mohawke's Lantern is available to preorder now on iTunes.

Sam de Jong's debut feature PRINS is released 25th June in the Netherlands.
