step into dream wife’s twisted teen bedroom scene
The new Hey Heartbreaker video flits from pre-internet era zany TV presenters to guitarist Alice Go’s real, CD-stacked teenage bedroom in Bristol.
A week after releasing their debut record, EP01, Dream Wife have dropped a new video for the first single Hey Heartbreaker, a riot grrrl influenced track with an addictive guitar riff and "Hey, hey, hey" chorus.
Directed by i-D favourite Eleanor Hardwick (who shot Sunflower Bean for the current issue) and Sam Boullier, the video has a late-retro vibe, flitting from guitarist Alice Go's actual teen bedroom in Bristol to a 90s-style music TV set (complete with creepy presenter) and a sweaty smoke-filled gig venue.
Singer Rakel Mjöll, guitarist Alice Go and bassist Bella Podpadec met at art school in Brighton, and Dream Wife began as an art project that was so well received it grew into the real deal. The influence of their visual art practice is very apparent in this highly-stylised video, as well as in the perfectly curated girl gang wardrobe -- from a fishnet top worn with a 'Pussy Power' leotard to a T-shirt emblazoned with 'Date me, I'm bored,' worn with a bubble gum pink skirt and lace-up white boots, used to stand triumphantly on the TV creep's prostrate form.
