Today is a sad day in Hollywood, with Sofia Coppola confirming she's exiting from her role as director on the planned adaptation of The Little Mermaid. Since the movie was announced last year, Coppola fans have been waiting eagerly for the refreshing revamp of the classic 1989 animated Disney version. Reasons for her parting from the film remain vague but"creative differences" seem to be at the heart.

The director of some of our favourite films including Lost in Translation and The Virgin Suicides has famously catapulted the careers of young actresses like Kirsten Dunst and Scarlett Johnson, so this news is an even greater shame for the exciting cast rumoured to be lined up forThe Little Mermaid. Thankfully she's still set to direct Bill Murray's film A Very Murray Christmas due out in December. But forThe Little Mermaid, the only taste of a modern remake we're likely to get is this amazing spoofby Funny or Die.
