i-DJ: dj yoda
Ahead of his show tonight in Brixton, we are pleased to present a very special personalised mix from the legendary DJ Yoda. Having proved his worth again and again on both the decks and production duties, he's taken things to another level with the...
What are the top three tracks getting heavy rotation in your sets?
DJ Scene & Four Color Zack feat. M.O.P., Slap It Down
The Bluebeaters, Roll With It
Kanye West, All Day
What's the most hedonistic party you've ever been to?
The private parties I've played at are definitely more hedonistic than the clubs. I had the chance to DJ in the Seychelles at a private party a few weeks ago, and that was definitely up there in the crazy stakes. But then, my memory is so bad that I always pick the most recent gigs when asked questions like this!
What's the most phenomenal clubbing venue in the world and why?
I love any DJ booth that you can see the sea from! There's definitely been some amazing examples of that when I've played in places like Africa, Bali and Dubai. But one of my favourite clubs in the world is Thekla, the boat in Bristol, for it's downright scuzziness.
If you could go back to back with any DJ, at any venue, who would it be and why?
I'd like to be at the infamous Latin Quarters club in NYC in about 1988, playing with Biz Markie. That's probably my musical mecca in terms of time and place.
History is made at night... what was the best night of your life?
My 30th birthday party was perfect. We had a disused private members club that had jacuzzis on the roof. I played all bashment on 45s and all my friends DJ'd.
What's the most debauched thing you've ever seen on the dance floor?
That was in Brighton in about 2005 and I don't want to even have to think about it ever again, let alone describe it.
What would your dream rider consist of?
Rare, exotic, colorful and limited edition breakfast cereals from the United States. Organic milk.
What does your actual rider consist of?
Erm, pretty much just that. But without all the adjectives.
What's your favourite party anthem of all time?
45 King, The 900 Number
Do you think music subcultures are losing their definition?
Genres, no. Subcultures, maybe. I think it's helpful to be able to define music by sub-genre (crucially, AFTER it's been made, not during the creative process) - so I have no problems with terms like trip-hop or EDM. But maybe the ease of access to all media is breaking down sub-cultures in terms of being into a certain style or way of life if you like one specific thing.
Where do you go when the record ends and the lights come on?
Wherever the best breakfast is served.
What track would you end the night on when everyone's still awake and its time to go to sleep?
Beastie Boys, Fight For Your Right (To Party)
What's your party trick?
To use turntables and scratch like someone from the OLDEN DAYS.
Finish the sentence, the music sounds better with...
Craft beer and cheese.
