Wes Anderson has announced another new movie
He's returning to Roald Dahl's world – this time for Netflix.
Wes Anderson, the cinematic auteur behind The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Darjeeling Limited, is on a winning streak right now. After his latest movie The French Dispatch broke pandemic records – while he was in Spain shooting its forthcoming, star-studded follow-up Asteroid City, no less – he’s quickly revealed what he’ll be working on next: a Netflix-funded adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.
Of course, Wes is no stranger to Roald Dahl’s stories. Back in 2009, he famously transformed the author’s pastoral fairytale, Fantastic Mr Fox, into a stop-motion classic starring George Clooney and Meryl Streep. When he adapted that book, he told journalists that a visit to the town where Roald Dahl lived up until his death in 1990 made him widen the movie’s focus into more of a story about the author, his attitudes, and how he lived. Now, his next adaptation, announced by the Daily Mail’s Baz Bamigboye 13 years on, will take a similar slant on Roald’s work.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is the name of a collection of seven short stories Roald published in 1977, taken from the name of one of the short stories within it. It’s not yet known if the film itself will be an adaptation of the book as a whole — which is possible, considering Wes’ love for anthological storytelling — or the titular story alone. Only one person has been cast so far (which makes us think it might be the latter): Benedict Cumberbatch.
Based loosely on the true story of Kuda Bux, a man Roald Dahl wrote a non-fiction feature on before working on his own adaptation, it tells the story of a gambler, the titular Henry Sugar, a man with his eyes sewn shut who purports to be able to see through other means, and what happens when the two cross paths. Apparently, it’s Dahl’s satirical take on his own critics who made a point of his nastiness throughout his career. It’s also one of his stories that’s intended for older children, so expect Wes to take slightly darker turns with it.
It’s expected Benedict Cumberbatch may play the lead character, but no details are formally confirmed yet. Shooting is expected to kick off in London this year. The Wes girls are fed once again.
