Lil Nas X and Megan Thee Stallion will pay your bills during Coronavirus

Angels amongst mere mortals!

Weird times! What we’re witnessing right now is the presiding bodies over every country rushing to find a way to say “don’t go into administration ur so sexy aha” to every ailing company in the midst of a shutdown of the Western hemisphere. Coronavirus is hitting businesses, both big and small, hard, and with governments (especially in Britain and the US) failing to take responsibility for those most hard done by, we’ve found ourselves in a very sticky situation. In a precarious job market, job losses are rife. And there’s very little young freelancers and the self-employed can do to find support as work dries up.

Are we surprised? Of course not. Does that spell disaster for everybody? Not if Lil Nas X and Megan Thee Stallion have anything to do with it! Riffing on Nicki Minaj’s famed offerings that have helped young people in the States get through college, the Gen Z rap icons have individually agreed to help those struck by the outbreak of COVID-19.

Last week, Lil Nas X recommended that his followers stay inside, and even offered them cash to grab food to stay holed up instead of going into a dangerous work environment. In celebration of her new record, Megan did the same.

What this indicates is that we have a new breed of young celebrities -- almost all rappers, in fact -- who recognise their earned privilege and choose to do something positive with it. Meanwhile, your favourite influencers are holed up in their Calabasas mansions riding this out with their hands pressed tightly on their purse. This is a super precarious time for freelancers, hospitality workers, retail staff and those on zero hour contracts, so it’s good to know that some people are out there doing good in the world. Lil Nas and Megan really did say we’re all in this together. xo
