By anyone's standards Shannon Purser has had a pretty big, weird year. Her supporting role of Barb in Stranger Things was a surprise break out performance of the show; in a handful of episodes her no-bullshit attitude won over the internet. But it turns out that IRL, Shannon is just as straight talking and inspiring as her onscreen character.

This week she took to Twitter to open up about her history of self harm, and encourage others struggling with mental health issues that recovery was achievable. Posting a photo of a razor blade her caption read, "*TRIGGER WARNING* I haven't self-harmed in years, but I kept this around, 'just in case.' I forgot it was there & now it's in the trash."

Followers immediately began responding with their own experiences of depression, and Shannon took the time to respond and engage personally with many of them. Barb might not be back for season two of Stranger Things, but we hope to see and hear a lot more of Shannon in 2017.
