Fashion has, in many respects, never felt so inclusive. And yet when it comes to the sneaker-pimped out world of streetwear, it’s generally accepted to be a bit of a boys club. You have Supreme, Stüssy, Palace. Of course, girls can wear these brands too (and boy do they). But streetwear is largely seen as a boys club for girls to join -- something Erin Magee wanted to address when she left her job at Supreme to set up riot grrrl rave label, MadeMe, back in 2007.

Nearly a decade on and MadeMe is one of the coolest streetwear labels on New York’s underground scene to date. But beyond the Big Apple, not much has been made of the cult brand -- a quirk Erin hopes to change this year, as she introduces MadeMe to a more global market.

First stop, the new Converse One Star Hotel -- an immersive two-day pop-up located in the heart of Shoreditch -- where Erin will be checking in over the weekend, having curated her very own riot grrrl inspired bedroom. Parked on one of top floors, a large bed is sprawled across the room, lemon yellow walls are littered with 90s rave posters and one section is covered entirely in doll parts (Erin was a big Hole fan growing up). Next to the bed are two tables; open any of the drawers and you find the teen dream treasure trove of chocolates and condoms. Dotted around the room are shoes from the designer’s collaboration with Converse -- a Doom Generation take on the classic One Star, based on an old vintage pair she found on Etsy a few years back.

“I’ve been a woman in the streetwear scene for a really long time,” Erin tells i-D. “This brand has always been pushing back against the very male-centric side of it. This room isn’t the bro-down room. It’s for girls. The MadeMe girl is open-minded and forward thinking. It’s for girls like Princess Nokia and the New York City drag scene queens.” Funny she should mention that, because tonight Princess Nokia will be performing a 90s inspired work-out performance with some of New York’s fiercest show girls.

Elsewhere in the hotel, Yung Lean, Paria Farzaneh and A$AP Nast will be taking over their own rooms, featuring performances from IAMDDB and Slowthai. There’s also a hotel-style gift shop and secret stock-room jam packed with newly-released sneakers, highly-coveted collabs and re-stocks, as well as a cinema showing Converse’s new skater flick Downtime.

To check out the MadeMe room, head to the One Star Hotel at 155 New Road, Hoxton, N1 6TA, open 16 and 17 February.
