heir to the pop throne, Ella Eyre

The hair! The hair! Look at that hair! Thing is, it’s not just Ella Eyre’s wonderfully wild mane that is attention-grabbingly ace. The 19-year-old has a right set of lungs on her too.

Boasting a super-sized smoky set of lungs that sound like they've been soaked in 40% proof Drambuie, Eyre has already helped Rudimental reach No.1 with last year's D&B smash Waiting All Night. The teenager's tenacious vocal can also be heard on the Wiz Khalifa track featuring Think About It taken from Naughty Boy's No.1 album, Hotel Cabana. "I sounded like I smoked even as a four year-old," laughs Ella. "I've had a very husky tone since a baby."

If things were different, we could be cheering Eyre on in the 2016 Olympics; however the one-time competitive swimmer swapped the Butterfly for Bugsy Malone at school, before realising that while the roar of the crowd appealed, the smell of greasepaint wasn't for her. "I love singing but I didn't want to sing other people's songs. Doing Musical Theatre, I had to pretend to be a character, whereas now I get to write my experiences down and have people relate and communicate to me when I perform live.

I want people to be able to relate to my music, to be driving home late at night and think 'Yes, that's just how I feel!

After bagging herself management, the Jamaican/Scottish/Maltese singer found herself featuring on then buzz band Bastille's cover of TLC's No Scrubs classic, No Angels, which shot straight to the top of the Hypemachine charts. A casual writing session with Rudimental followed, with Virgin EMI (now Virgin Universal) snapping up the Kenzo and Nike Air Mx fan early last year. Eyre spent much of 2013 touring the world with Naughty Boy and Rudimental - "It was lot of male nakedness. Bellies and hair and bums" - before forming an impromptu group with Becky Hill, Ann-Marie and Sinead Harnett called The Vaginas of Rudimental. "There's something on YouTube," she grins of their lo-fi cover of Lorde's Royals. "We might do more, who knows." Naming Hans Zimmer, Etta James, Basement Jaxx and Lauryn Hill as her most significant musical motivators, Ella is currently working on her debut album with MNEK, Two Inch Punch and Fraser T. Smith. "There's not many artists my age making music for other people my age," decides Ella of her as-yet-untitled debut. "I want people to relate to my music. It's an album that you put on when you're driving home late at night and you think 'Yes, that's just how I feel!"
