rihanna speaks about inspiring young women at black girls rock! awards
RiRi was honored alongside Amandla Stenberg, Shonda Rhimes and Gladys Knight at the 10th anniversary of the awards last night.
BET's Black Girls Rock! event took place on Friday night, celebrating the abundance of talented black women in the entertainment industry. Rihanna stepped up to receive the well-deserved Rock Star Award, making an inspirational speech on stage, thanking not only her mother and grandmother for being strong black women, but also Black Girls Rock! for "Celebrating us in a world that doesn't celebrate us enough." RiRi went on to say, "Role model is not the title they like to give me… (but) I think I can inspire a lot of young women to be themselves and that is half the battle."
Others who were honored at the event included writer and producer Shonda Rhimes (Grey's Anatomy; Scandal), actor Amandla Stenberg, and the legendary singer Gladys Knight.
Hilary Clinton also made an appearance, telling the audience, "My life has been changed by strong black women leaders," before introducing Beverly Bond, who founded Black Girls Rock! in 2006. The full show airs on Tuesday, April 5 on BET.
