The first teaser trailer for Suffragette, the film about the fight for women's right to vote at the turn of the last century, has been released in support of the #votingmatters campaign, a movement encouraging young women to vote.

The film is not out until October 30, but the makers hope to raise awareness of #votingmatters and get young women to register to vote in the general election ahead of the April 20 deadline. Over 9 million women didn't vote in the last election in 2010.

The already Oscar-tipped Suffragette stars Carey Mulligan as Maud, a young woman who joins the Women's Social and Political Union as it fights for the right to vote in early 20th Century Britain. Meryl Streep has a small role as famed political campaigner Emmeline Pankhurst and the film also stars Helena Bonham Carter and Anne-Marie Duff. Suffragette is directed by Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane) and Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady) contributed the screenplay. The film has already made history by being the first commercial project allowed to film in the Houses of Parliament.
