tlc previews two new songs from first album in 14 years
The best-selling American girl group of all time shares snippets of empowering R&B bangers Joy Ride and Haters.
Empowering, perennially relevant 90s girl group TLC have sold over 75 million records worldwide since releasing Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip in 1992. Tionne Watkins, Lisa Lopes, and Rozonda Thomas's personal disputes might be nearly as well-publicised as their legal ones — Lopes once famously sent a letter to an industry publication claiming that she was the real talent of the group — but the album's three-part fusion of R&B, funk, and hip-hop was demonstrative of the group's belief that all three members are irreplaceable. So was the Kickstarter campaign that Watkins and Thomas launched 14 years after the untimely death of Lopes in 2002. While such comeback initiatives by other groups could have been scoffed at, the campaign was kind of perfect for a group famously plagued by massive financial troubles and the loss of its idiosyncratic, most outspoken member. TLC hit its $150,000 target in just two days, with Katy Perry making headlines by donating $5,000 to score a sleepover with T-Boz.
Watkins and Thomas have been laying low since revealing on the group's Facebook page in June that the album was near completion. "TLC have completed 15 solid tracks worthy of inclusion on the album that they cannot wait to share with us! The tracklist is yet to be decided, but we can expect a release in the 4th quarter of this year," one update said. With the end of that quarter just two months away, TLC has previewed two of the songs from it via Apple Music (listeners in Japan can hear the full versions). One is the wonderfully nostalgic R&B banger Joy Ride, the other is a self-love anthem aptly titled Haters. Get a taste of both tracks below and stay tuned for 13 more.
