Netflix have finally given us a release date and full trailer for their upcoming biographical drama, Selena: The Series, and it’s just as good as we hoped. The nine part series is based on the life of the iconic grammy-winning Latinx singer who famously found global success within the incredibly male-dominated Tejano genre and is credited with bringing it to mainstream audiences — before she was murdered by the founder of her own fan club in 1995, that is.

Last year, we were given a teaser of lead actress Christian Serratos donning Selena Quintanilla’s signature glittery-red jumpsuit, bell-bottoms spinning as she dances; and despite a slight delay in production due to the global pandemic, Netflix have now dropped the full trailer, alongside the great news that the series will be available to stream from 4 December. The year is saved!

The series will follow the childhood of the Queen of Tejano music, exploring her family’s early struggles and poverty, the hard decisions they had to make and Selena’s rapid rise to fame and success that turned her into one of the most beloved Latinx artists of all time. In a new trailer, Christian can be seen in one of Selena’s famed high-waisted looks, joined by father Abraham — played Ricardo Chavira of Desperate Housewives fame — who helmed her career at the beginning. The Purge’s Gabriel Chavarria and actress Noemi Gonzalez also appear as the singer’s siblings and early bandmates.

The show is being produced with the approval of Selena’s family, with her sister and father even joining the production team. “Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory,” said her sister Suzette, back when the show was first announced. “With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives. We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come.”
