For one of the most famous people on the planet, Beyoncé is pretty elusive. Any sighting is a treat — but a surprise appearance, well that's something else entirely. With that in mind, we can't imagine the energy in the room when Queen Bey kicked off the BET Awards with an unannounced performance.

Opening with a voiceover from Martin Luther King, Jr's "I Have A Dream" speech, the superstar then moved into "Freedom" — a standout track from her second visual album Lemonade. Kendrick Lamar joined her on the partially-flooded stage for his a capella verse as graphics of fire, sparks, and flowing molten lava screened in the background.

The internet immediately erupted in praise as fans gushed over the powerful spectacle, noting the impact and also lamenting who ever had to perform next. We have to admit, it's an amazing thing to witness, but not an act you'd want to follow.
