Abel Tesfaye has been one of the music world's most vocal supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement. Following the police killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile in early July, the artist known as The Weeknd tweeted a rallying message to his 3.9 million followers. "enough is enough. it's time to stand up for this. we can either sit and watch, or do something about it. the time is now. #blacklivesmatter," he wrote, following it up with the uncompromising "#BLUELIVESMURDER." Tesfaye has now put his money where his mouth is in a very generous way. According to a report confirmed by The Fader, he has donated $250,000 to Black Lives Matter, furthering the network's aim to rebuild the black liberation movement and center lives that have historically been marginalized.

Tesfaye isn't the only celebrity to have donated to what might be the most important cause spurred by the social media generation. Jay-Z's Tidal donated $1.5 million to Black Lives Matter earlier this year, having raised the funds for the civil rights group at a 2015 Brooklyn Tidal X concert. Nor is it The Weeknd's only financial gift in recent days. Last weekend the Toronto native donated $50,000 to the University of Toronto to help establish an Ethiopic Studies program.
