i-dj: ardalan

This week's i-DJ comes courtesy of Ardalan. His productions of gnarly, gritty bass, super tight drums and an appeal that ventures far further than the chin-strokers is what makes the Iranian born DJ/ producer so suited to the DIRTYBIRD family.

His latest offering to the label comes in the form of the i-D-premiered Function, an infectious club banger taken from the DIRTYBIRD 10 compilation that we cant get enough. Now we welcome him into the i-D mix family with 50 minutes of straight bumping house, with a little added wind down to round things off... and we must say, its bloody brilliant. Press play!

What are the top three tracks getting heavy rotation in your sets?
1. Justin Martin & Ardalan, Function Feat. PartyPatty
2. Miro Pajic, In My House
3. Billy Kenny, Work

What's the most hedonistic party you've ever been to?
There have been tons of good ones around the world, but I would say Symbiosis & Sunset Campout in California. Symbiosis is so interesting and awesome. It's like a mini burning man, but with nature and water, which for me is even more crucial! Sunset Campout is a party thrown by SF house music collective Pacific Sound. They have been throwing my favorite parties in SF and been doing it for the last 20 years! The campout is situated in this crazy tiny town in the mountains and it's magical.

What's the most phenomenal clubbing venue in the world and why?
I have three, Panorama Bar. It feels very majestic. The Mezzanine in San Francisco is also phenomenal, Our quarterly Dirtybird parties are some of the craziest. But XOYO in London was phenomenal as well. I remember playing with Justin and Eats Everything and the crowd was so good and intimate.

If you could go back to back with any DJ, at any venue, who would it be and why?
Besides my friends Sepehr, Justin, and the rest of the crew, I would say a vinyl set with Zip and at any venue that would let us play + 6 hours. It would be insane with Zip because he plays really good records and of course he's pretty much a very underrated legend.

History is made at night… what was the best night of your life?
The best night of my life was probably when I played at a little festival my friends threw near San Francisco . It was called Ghost-town. It was nicely done and there was a mini train installed at the venue and everyone would go around the dance floor in the train, until it crashed. All my friends from high school were there and I remember I met my girlfriend there and the rest is history!

What's the most debauched thing you've ever seen on the dance floor?
Hmm, good question, I guess that one time someone threw large panties (XXL) into the booth. I didn't notice the size until I stretched while DJ'ing. It was a funny scene.

What would your dream rider consist of?
My dream rider would consist of Steven Seagal as my cook and using his skills right by the DJ booth.

What does your actual rider consist of?
My rider is actually not so "DIVA" as many believe it to be. I have coconut water, a bucket of cold Stella's, a bottle of Jameson. I am thinking of adding donuts to it.

What's your favourite party anthem of all time?
Paul Johnson - Get Get Down - This track reminds me of when I was 10, and I thought this was the party jam of the century.

Do you think music subcultures are losing their definition?
I wouldn't say so. I think that that there is more connections being made among the subcultures of music. Some are becoming more interesting and others are becoming more artificial. For example, everyone complains how EDM has taken over and made things worse. As much as I don't relate to it, I feel that it has helped many more people. Kids are exploring more than the tip of the iceberg that is EDM. The underground as we call it isn't so underground as many are playing and flying festivals around the world. I would say the local music subculture has become better since the underground is being recognized and influencing small towns to throw and create there own party with "good" music.

What producer are you predicting big things from this year?
There are so many but I think Little by little, Lancelot, and Billy Kenny are making amazing tunes right now!

Where do you go when the record ends and the lights come on? I like to say to the beach to watch the sunrise, but it's pretty windy right now. I usually go with the flow. If I am not too tired I would like to go for an adventure around the city I'm in. Maybe get a late night snack or attend a late night party if the vibes are right.

What track would you end the night on when everyone's still awake and its time to go to sleep?
Gidge, I Fell in Love.

What's your party trick?
I could say shutgunnin' 10 beers in a row. I think some would disagree but you gotta see it to believe it. I also learned how to turn a carrot into a recorder because you never know when your best moments of the night might be ruined because your phone is dead.
