sony has offered kesha her freedom if she retracts rape accusation
In February a New York judge denied Kesha's request for an injunction against Dr. Luke, the producer she alleges "sexually, physically, verbally, and emotionally abused [her] to the point where [she] nearly lost her life." A ruling in Kesha's favor would have effectively voided her contract with the Sony Music subsidiary Kemosabe. Instead, she remains unable to make music outside of her contract, and will not record with the label while it continues to support Dr. Luke. "I would be willing to work with Sony if they do the right thing and break all ties that bind me to my abuser," Kesha wrote after the February ruling against her.
After the February ruling, the public, by-and-large, sided with Kesha. Fellow celebrities sent messages of support, media outlets endorsed her testimony as much they were legally allowed, and keen fans orchestrated the #FreeKesha social media push. It seemed, for a time, that Sony would be forced to wake up from its PR nightmare and either nullify Kesha's contract, or cut ties to Dr. Luke. The label did no such thing.
In fact, Sony allegedly came to Kesha with a very different offer. In a Sunday Instagram post, the artist detailed a proposal from "the powers that be," presumably Sony. "so. I got offered my freedom IF i were to lie," Kesha wrote, "I would have to APOLOGIZE publicly and say that I never got raped. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS behind closed doors." It's not an offer she intends to accept. "I will not take back the TRUTH. I would rather let the truth ruin my career than lie for a monster ever again."
The offer begs more questions of a situation becoming increasingly difficult to understand: how valuable of an asset is Dr. Luke if Sony must hold onto him so tightly? Did the label not anticipate, or at least consider, that Kesha would make the details of its offer public? The most difficult question to guess at remains—why is Sony protecting Dr. Luke's reputation at the cost of its own?
