Google's latest video ad presents the inspiring and emotional story of Jake, a young trans man from America. Jake speaks about his decision to transition, saying "Things were a little bit different for me, compared to my friends. Growing up, I was never comfortable with they way I looked when I looked in the mirror. I would want to see something masculine, I would want to be able to take off my shirt one day and have all these muscles. Knowing that that wasn't going to happen, I couldn't actually be happy." He adds that, "When the idea of starting to transition was brought about it was like: this is it, this is what I've been waiting for, this is what I need."

The film shows video from Jake's YouTube channel, where he shared the various stages of his transition, and he explains that now he just wants to hit the gym and "build this body that I've always wanted". Also featured in the ad is Hailee Bland Walsh of City Gym, who runs exercise classes specifically for trans men that Jake attends; the ad is essentially about Google's business services helping companies find their customers. We have relatively recently got used to seeing trans people in the media, with Laverne Cox, Janet Mock and Caitlyn Jenner appearing on magazine covers and TV, but the visibility of young trans people still needs to be improved and it is much more rare to see a brand work with a trans man than a glamorous trans woman, so Google's ad is certainly a positive step in the right direction.
