watch kali uchis' dreamy new video, 'rush'
Since dropping her Por Vida mixtape in February, Kali Uchis has become the hot female singer to watch. The Colombia-born, Virginia-based singer has already collaborated with Snoop Dogg, Diplo and Tyler, the Creator, who she's also appeared on stage with at Coachella and on his new album, Cherry Bomb. Now she has released a dreamy, sun-drenched new video for Rush that she co-directed with photography duo WIISSA (Vanessa Hollander and Wilson Philippe).
The saturated, road-trip-and-rollerblades film has a psychedelic disco vibe, featuring retro styles from the 70s and 80s. There's also a strong Tarantino influence, flexed when Kali rides on the bonnet Death Proof B-movie style. Kali's doe-eyes and dark-lined lips are paired with rainbow tees, cut-out swimsuits, red sports pants and gold jewelry, on the road with her girl gang in a trippy swimming pool and beside the sea.
When we spoke to Kali last year, she told us her love of filmmaking started young, when she would skip classes to create Tarantino-inspired short films with awesome-sounding plots: "It was a movie about two lesbians teenagers. One of them is a drug dealer who fakes her death but actually just moves to another school. The girlfriend finds out that she's alive because of a Facebook account."
Kali may have lived out of her car before becoming the most buzzed-out about songstress this side of Venus, but now she's driving up the fast lane into our musical and sartorial hearts.
