The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is getting a 30th anniversary reunion special
Now that’s what I call a cultural reset.
30 years since the legendary sitcom went on air, the original cast of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air are reuniting for “a funny and heartfelt night full of music, dancing and special surprise guests, in honour of the series that ran for six seasons and 148 episodes.” Exactly what the doctor ordered, really.
The anniversary special, set to stream on HBO Max around Thanksgiving — there’s no exact premiere date yet — is planning to tape on September 10, the exact date of the show’s debut on NBC three whole decades ago.
Will Smith, the star of the smash-hit comedy will return to film the special, along with series regulars Tatyana Ali, Karyn Parsons, Joseph Marcell, Daphne Maxwell Reid, Alfonso Ribeiro, and — who could forget — DJ Jazzy Jeff. The cast are reuniting to celebrate the Fresh Prince_’_s cultural impact since its 90s premiere, along with the aforementioned music, dancing, and all-round good vibes.
If that’s not enough Bel-Air for you, the sitcom is set to get the gritty reboot treatment á la Riverdale once it finds a streaming home. Executive-produced by Will and Jada’s own Westbrook Media, the show will be a dramatic retelling of the Fresh Prince_’_s story based on a fan-made trailer by filmmaker Morgan Cooper that went viral last year.
So that’s two, count ‘em, two things you can definitely look forward to happening in the near future. We could all use a hefty dose of wholesome this year.
