Looking for a mysterious and creepy drama to see you through the warm summer days? You’re in luck! Netflix is about to release Katla, a series set in a remote Icelandic town in the aftermath of a volcanic eruption. When the town is declared a danger zone and its residents begin to evacuate the area, things are eerie enough - that is, until people that had previously gone missing start returning to the village covered in ash, with no memory of where they’ve been or why.

According to the trailer - which you can watch below - there’s also a psychic, some doppelgängers, the general wrath of mother nature and maybe a monster or two involved. Netflix have kept full details of the plot a secret so far but judging by the teasers they’ve shared, we can expect a strange and unsettling few episodes to be heading our way.

The official synopsis reads: “One year after the violent eruption of the subglacial volcano Katla, the peace and tranquility in the small town of Vik has been dramatically disturbed. As people evacuate the area, mysterious elements that have been deeply frozen into the glacier from prehistoric times start to emerge from the melting ice and cause consequences no one could ever foresee.”

Katla is the first ever Netflix original series to come from the country and stars Icelandic musician Guðrún Ýr Eyfjörð (also known as GDRN) and famed Icelandic actor Ingvar Sigurdsson, as well as Íris Tanja Flygenring, Aliette Opheim and Þorsteinn Bachmann. Thanks to the country’s beautiful scenery, it also looks to be a visual feast too and has definite Nordic Noir vibes, as the residents of the town try to find out who (or what) is behind the spooky happenings before it’s too late.

Katla is also the name of a real volcano in southern Iceland and hasn’t had a major eruption for over a century, with some scientists thinking it’s already well overdue for another sometime soon. We can only hope there’s nothing supernatural locked inside the ice of the real volcano though…

Watch the trailer for Katla below and catch the whole show on Netflix from 17th June.
