Raf Simons is presenting womenswear for SS21
It’s the first time the Belgian designer will be doing so under his own name.
SOUND THE FASHION KLAXON! Raf Simons womenswear is incoming! Yes, that’s right, the Belgian designer -- who it wouldn’t be a stretch to say single-handedly ushered in a new age of menswear in the 00s -- is branching out into womenswear at his namesake label for SS21. The news was first made known via a series of posts on the designer’s Instagram, with a message reading: “Raf Simons will present his upcoming Spring/Summer 2021 men’s and first-ever women’s collection on October 23rd” along with a selection of patches printed with slogans such as: ‘Join Us’, ‘Question Everything’ and ‘Teenage Dreams’.
It’s a move that makes sense -- though he’s historically presented his eponymous collection on the Paris menswear calendar, the subtly androgynous awkwardness and youth-subcultural references of his work have long found fans across the gender spectrum. It’s hardly the first time he’s made moves in the womenswear world either. His tenures at Jil Sander and Dior, both of which were marked by an unfussy, quietly intricate approach, are the stuff of fashion lore, and his more recent posting at Calvin Klein saw him put in his pop-culture contact lenses, mining and subverting tropes of Americana.
With last season’s announcement of Raf’s arrival at Prada, where he’ll be working alongside Miuccia herself as co-creative director, this means that SS21 will see him debut two new womenswear collections. Stay tuned to see how these new chapters of fashion history play out.
