American Eagle's sister brand Aerie, started their campaign to stop photoshopping models in fashion beyond recognition in 2014. Last season saw Emma Roberts go au naturale for #AerieReal, but this is the first time the brand have cast a size 12 model to flaunt their swimwear. A teaser video shows 19-year-old body-positive pioneer Barbara Ferreira explaining why digital enhancement is not the one: "I am unapologetically myself, no matter what anybody's opinion of me is. Not being retouched in the images is something that is very important to me, people knowing that that's what I look like, without anyone's perception of what my body needs to look like." Barbie captioned an image from the campaign on her Instagram with "This is a healthy body too."

Frustrated with having no curvy role models to look up to while she was growing up, Barbie Ferreira decided to take things into her own hands, sending off some images of herself to American Apparel. Today, she is that role model to the Insta-world over, signed to Wilhelmina models and starring in campaigns like #AerieReal. Alongside other curvy models like Myla Delbasio, Ashley Graham and Denise Bidot she is slowly but surely changing the way the fashion industry presents bodies photoshopped to unattainable "perfection". As Barbie told us in an interview last year, "We all come in so many heights and sizes that it would be silly to go so long without representing them. I think if the industry really took the risk of diversity, it will be surprised with the support it gets. Everyone is sick of one type of beauty, it's 2015." That risk has just been taken, and Barbie's the face of it.
