One of the British fashion industry's most stealthily successful figures, Nicholas Kirkwood, has opened his first space in Beijing along with renowned department store, Shin Kong Place. "Beijing attracts both local and international consumers so it will be an amazing support for us in the region, as we grow more into China in the future," Kirkwood told i-D.

It joins his other brick and mortar flagship locations at Mount Street in London, New York's Meatpacking District and Wynn Las Vegas & Encore and is part of a wider expansion with pop-ups in Paris, Japan, Florida and Dubai in 2014. Global growth has followed the announcement of his partnership with LVMH last year. So is he having to cater differently to the Chinese market in any way? "The introduction of the 55mm heel height has been one of our best sellers, especially in China, but I would generally say that the Chinese customer is quite adventurous, so it's inspiring as a designer."
