Before the models had even hit the Dior couture catwalk this afternoon, presenting the first collection from the maison since Raf Simons' departure in October, rumours were swirling around Paris about the much celebrated Belgian designer's eventual replacement.

Dior have chosen not to announce a new creative director until after the autumn/winter 16 ready to wear collection is presented, designed -- as today's couture was -- by in-house team led by Serge Ruffieux and Lucie Meier, but the word on the Paris front rows is that Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton is a strong contender for the role.

Burton has been at McQueen for almost two decades, starting as Lee McQueen's personal assistant in 1997 before working her way up to the position where she was able to take over the reigns after his untimely passing in 2010.

Previous names popping up in the rumour mill have included Alber Elbaz, who left Lanvin on less than amicable terms in October, Celine creative director Phoebe Philo and Olivier Theyskens, who left Theory in 2014 and has not yet accepted another major role.
