10 ragga, rap, R&B and afrobeat tracks that have ruled london’s biggest gay “urban” night
From Beyoncé and Ms Dynamite to Dexter Daps and Tony Matterhorn, get that Friday feeling with these Bootylicious bangers.
For all of London's LGBT lovers of R&B, hip hop, afrobeat and bashment, Bootylicious has been the go-to club to dutty whine for over a decade, whether its been in a Vauxhall archway or at its current location at The Electric in Brixton. One of its longest-running DJs is Biggy C, aka Calvin Dawkins, who's been playing the night for 13 years. British-Jamaican Biggy C spins a range of tracks from R&B to afrobeat, but reckons bashment is the most popular sound of the night - something he says you're more likely hear in London than you are in Jamaica, where the musical mix is more likely to be on a conscious tip, or else pure Nick Jonas, Celine Dion or Michael Bolton. If you head down to "Booty" though, these are some of the tracks that are going to turn things up.
Dexter Daps, 7 Eleven
"Fresh for 2015, this very X-rated song brings you back a time to when anthems sang out and the crowd followed suit, singing out the lyrics at the top of their lungs."
Lady Saw, Man a Di Least
"This entire song can be seen being acted out all around you at Bootylicious, with people transforming into that carefree and liberated person Lady Saw is professing to be."
Vybz Kartel, Turn & Whine
"Far too many Vybz tunes had Booty revellers losing their minds but it would catch a real serious vibe on the dance floor when this classic hypnotised them!"
Mavado, Hope & Pray
"All cut's on the Triple Bounce Riddim were anthems at Booty, but this was for the lovers of the more conscious. Mavado delivering in his operatic style."
"A collective of African artists came together under the name of "Mavins" and gave us Dorubucci. Afro-beats at its finest. This infectious beat got people gyrating double time with its warm melody."
Notorious BIG, One More Chance
Sticky ft. Ms Dynamite, Booo!
Tony Matterhorn, Goodas
Beyoncé, Get Me Bodied
Bootylicious End of Year Party is on Sunday 27th December at Electric Brixton.
