On US talkshow The View yesterday, Whoopi Goldberg and co. tackled rapper Eric Sermon's claim that hip hop wasn't ready for a transgender person. After former Cosby Show cutie Raven-Symoné said that hip hop should be about freedom of speech and needed to better acknowledge behind-the-scenes LGBT people, actress Rosie Perez tried to convince Sermon - a friend of hers - to reconsider his position, name-checking the cutting edge of LGBT talent in the process. Perez said that hip hop was about youth and that it was the youth showing Sermon the future. "When hip hop started it was very homophobic," she admitted. "And then Frank Ocean came out. And then came Leif… then there's Cakes Da Killa… and there's a transgender DJ called Julianna Huxtable who is selling out [shows]. The hip hop world will be ready. Eric, please come on board."

Not only is it good to see such names taken to mainstream American TV audiences, but it's also heartening to know that Rosie is just as on the pulse as she was when she was shaking it on the Soul Train
